Top 5 Celebrities That Should Be Video Game Protagonists

The leading role of a game is just as important as the gameplay itself.  The character that you get to drive through perils and puzzles not only shapes the way you view the game, but it shapes the way you remember the game as well.  We have Nathan Drake from Uncharted, Laura Croft from Tomb Raider, and Cloud Strife from Final Fantasy 7 while the list goes on.  All of them are memorable eyes to view the game through and that pivotal role makes the experience worth it.  Same goes for movies—and sometimes you even go see a movie just for the actor who is in the lead.  For this list, here’s a group of actors that need their faces, personalities, and acting chops in a game for us to enjoy.

1.  Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson

the rock

The Rock is as charismatic as it gets.  He’s charming and funny and doesn’t take too much seriously while taking nothing for granted.  He’s a fantastic human being who spends time with fans and children just to make their days.  Add to that the fact that he’s a mountain of a man who could bench-press the Hulk and you’ve got yourself a hero worth co-piloting within any game.  Imagine that awesome smile as you toss around a few snarky quips and then homerun swing your enemies straight to the moon.  He would be an easy one to write into a story and more than a blast to play as.  Even if all we get is a cooking game, I’d still be down with it.

2.  Emily Blunt

Now this one is a no-brainer.  She can do action, she can do smart, she can do sexy, and she can do fun.  All the things a great hero needs in order to reach everyone.  Emily owned in Edge of Tomorrow and always nails the emotional moments when doing serious flicks.  In real life, she’s whimsical and entertaining in a sort of beautifully normal way and that could translate well into almost any kind of game design.  If I were looking for a leading female that could do it all—Emily would be my first pick.

3.  Idris Elba

Like The Rock, Elba is a force to be reckoned with, but his charisma onscreen is stunning.  He can be a leader or a rogue and either way he’s equally compelling.  He’s also done action, but I’d say his most compelling role was Luther where he plays an unhinged detective a la Sherlock style who solves his run-ins with baddies by beating them nearly to death.  Noble or questionable, Idris would be my pick for an interesting character to play as where maybe you don’t know what he’s going to do next.  I’d love to see something like a Psychological horror game starring this burly Brit, but honestly he’s so good I’d play as him in just about anything.

4.  Zoe Saldana

zoe saldana

Here’s a lady I wouldn’t want to mess with.  She can be a charming seductress or she can be the snake you never saw coming.  Saldana’s proven time and again that she can be a powerhouse on the action scene while still maintaining that captivating vulnerability and beauty that she naturally exudes. She’s done revenge-thrillers and she’s done romances, so I’d be willing to take her for a spin in any narrative.  Zoe is one of the most capable and interesting leading ladies in Hollywood and I don’t think any type of gameplay would be off the table here.

5.  Timothy Olyphant

This one may be a personal gesture on my part, but I was blown away by his acting in the FX series Justified.  Olyphant brought a modern approach to the western genre that was fueled by Elmore Leonard’s great lines and it just feels wrong to not give this man a game.  Give him a gun and surround him in good writing and honestly that’s all you need.  As a player, I would love to have someone like him with his grit and charm as my own personal weapons.  It could be Sci-Fi or it could be a historical piece, but either way Olyphant has proved that he’s a badass in front of the camera and I want him in front of my controller.

These are just my top 5, but I’m sure you have yours.  If you agree with anyone on this list or have a list of your own, feel free to share it in the comments or hit me up on Twitter  @RAT_FOX .
